Andrew Diaz is a local actor and real estate agent. He has workshopped several plays with Plan-B Theatre Company (including WHAT ARE YOU? which is where ERIC(A) was born) and was invited to a rehearsal of ERIC(A). These are his thoughts.
I don’t watch much theater, but when I do I prefer Plan-B productions.
I judge a good theater experience on whether or not I forgot where I’ve been for the past hour. This happened . . . at rehearsal!
I was blessed with an invite to watch Plan-B’s newest creation from the mind of playwright Matthew Ivan Bennett. ERIC(A) is a brave and deep journey of a trans man. Jerry Rapier must direct with the most delicate of hands to guide this one-person show. The last 15 minutes I was completely forward in my seat, enthralled with what Eric was going through and hoping for the best to the very end. This story is, of course, the path of a transgender person but Matthew and Teresa Sanderson, who performs the role, have found a way to make this a completely human story. It relates to everyone.
Teresa Sanderson is a treasure – a god(dess). I was lucky enough to see her tackle this character when it was part of an idea from MIB called WHAT ARE YOU? We did a staged reading in the fall of 2010 and I remember how “locked in” she was with this character. Teresa literally goes away while on stage and something works through her. She becomes ERIC(A). There are no strings as the say.
So, if you are tired of the same ol’ swill around town and want to have a genuine experience. Go to Plan-B Theatre, buy your tickets and thank me afterward.
Stay artsy my friends . . .
Matthew Ivan Bennett’s ERIC(A) receives its world premiere at Plan-B Theatre Company February 28-March 10, 2013. Performed by Teresa Sanderson and directed by Jerry Rapier. Click here for more information and tickets.
